1. Introduction

Yuxi City is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, located in the central part of Yunnan. It borders Kunming City to the north, Pu'er City to the southwest, Honghe Prefecture to the southeast, and Chuxiong Prefecture to the northwest. Situated on the western edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, between the Ailao Mountains and the Hengduan Mountains, the terrain is higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast, featuring a complex landscape with interwoven mountains, valleys, plateaus, and basins. The Nanpan River, Yuan River, and Lüzhi River flow through the area, and lakes such as Yangzonghai Lake, Fuxian Lake, Xingyun Lake, and Qilu Lake are distributed across the region. The city covers an area of 14,942 square kilometers, with a total population of 2.2495 million in 2020. The municipal government is located in Hongta District. Yuxi is a major hub for the tobacco industry, renowned as the "Hometown of Yunnan Tobacco," and is also known as the "Hometown of Huadeng (Flower Lantern Opera)" and the "Granary of Central Yunnan."

Name History

2. Etymology

The name "Yuxi" for Yuxi City originates from its geographical environment and historical background. According to historical records, the name Yuxi can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty, due to its strategic location, the Yuxi area became an important military stronghold and economic center. The name "Yuxi" is composed of two characters: "Yu" (玉) and "Xi" (溪), symbolizing a "jade-like stream."

In ancient times, this area was part of the Dian Kingdom. In the second year of the Yuanfeng era (109 BCE) during the Western Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu of Han dispatched troops to conquer the Dian Kingdom. The King of Dian surrendered and was granted the Seal of the King of Dian. The Yizhou Commandery was established, with its seat at Dianchi County (present-day Jinning District, Kunming City), and the area of the current city belonged to it. In the third year of the Jianxing era (225 CE) of the Shu Han period during the Three Kingdoms, Yizhou Commandery was renamed Jianning Commandery. In the seventh year of the Taishi era (271 CE) of the Western Jin Dynasty, Ningzhou was established, and Jianning Commandery was placed under its jurisdiction. In the second year of the Tai'an era (303 CE), the western part of Jianning Commandery was separated to form Yizhou Commandery. In the second year of the Yongjia era (308 CE), Yizhou Commandery was renamed Jinning Commandery. During the late Liang period of the Southern Dynasties, Jinning Commandery was abolished. Subsequently, the central plains dynasties gradually lost control over the region, and the Cuan clan came to rule the area.

During the Tang Dynasty, the territory came under the control of Nanzhao. The northern part belonged to the Tuodong Jiedushi (military governor), where Wenfu Prefecture (seat in present-day Hongta District) and Heyang Commandery (seat in present-day Chengjiang County) were established. Jiang County was renamed Jiangchuan County (seat in present-day Jiuzhou, Jiangchuan District) and placed under Jinning Prefecture. The southern part belonged to the Tonghai Dudufu (military commissioner's office, seat in present-day Tonghai County). During the Dali Kingdom period, the northern part belonged to Shanchan Fu, with Buxiong Bu (present-day Jiangchuan County) and Luojia Bu (present-day Chengjiang County) established. In the south, the Tonghai Dudufu was reorganized into Xiushan Commandery, establishing Xi'e Bu (present-day Eshan and Xinping Counties), Ning Bu (present-day Huaning County), and the Luopan Bu of Weichu Fu (present-day Yuanjiang County).

In the fifth year of the Xianzong era of the Yuan Dynasty (1255), the Ning Bu Wanhu Fu (ten-thousand household office, seat in present-day Langkuang, Huaning County) was established in Ning Bu; the Xi'e Qianhu (thousand household office, seat in present-day Pengzuba, Chahe Township, Eshan County) was established in Xi'e Bu, subordinate to the Abo Wanhu. In the sixth year of the Xianzong era (1256), the Luojia Wanhu was established in Luojia Bu; Wenfu Prefecture was changed to Wenfu Qianhu, subordinate to the Luojia Wanhu; the Jiangchuan Qianhu was established in Buxiong Bu, belonging to the Luojia Wanhu; the Tonghai Qianhu was established in Xiushan Commandery, subordinate to the Shanchan Wanhu Fu. In the third year of the Zhiyuan era (1266), the Luojia Wanhu was renamed Zhonglu. In the fourth year of the Zhiyuan era (1267), the Yimen Qianhu Suo (seat in present-day Yimen County) was established. In the seventh year of the Zhiyuan era (1270), Wenfu Qianhu was changed to Xiuna County. In the twelfth year of the Zhiyuan era (1275), Yimen Qianhu Suo was changed to Yimen County, belonging to Zhongqing Lu. In the thirteenth year of the Zhiyuan era (1276), Tonghai Qianhu was changed to Tonghai County, and Nanlu was renamed Lin'an Lu, with its seat at Tonghai County; Hexi Prefecture (seat in present-day Hexi Town, Tonghai County) was established, subordinate to Lin'an Lu; Ning Bu Wanhu Fu was changed to Ning Prefecture, belonging to Lin'an Lu; Xi'e Qianhu was changed to Xi'e Prefecture, subordinate to Lin'an Lu, and Pingdian County (seat in present-day Jiucheng, Xinping County) was separated from it; Xinxing Prefecture was established, with its seat at Xiuna County, subordinate to Chengjiang Lu; Jiangchuan Qianhu was changed to Jiangchuan Prefecture, belonging to Chengjiang Lu (the prefecture and lu shared the same seat at present-day Longjie, Jiangchuan District). In the sixteenth year of the Zhiyuan era (1279), Zhonglu was renamed Chengjiang Lu, and Heyang County was established as the attached county of Chengjiang Lu. During the Zhiyuan era, the Yuanjiang Wanhu Fu (seat in present-day Yuanjiang County) was established in Luopan Bu. In the twentieth year of the Zhiyuan era (1283), Jiangchuan Prefecture was downgraded to Jiangchuan County. In the twenty-fifth year of the Zhiyuan era (1288), Yuanjiang Wanhu Fu was changed to Yuanjiang Lu. In the twenty-sixth year of the Zhiyuan era (1289), Xi'e Prefecture was downgraded to Xi'e County, subordinate to Ning Prefecture; Hexi Prefecture was downgraded to Hexi County. In the fifth year of the Dade era (1301), Xiuna County was abolished and merged into Xinxing Prefecture. In the final years of the Zhizheng era, the seat of Ning Prefecture moved to present-day Huaning County town.

In the fifteenth year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1382), Chengjiang Lu was changed to Chengjiang Fu; Yuanjiang Lu was changed to Yuanjiang Fu; Lin'an Lu was changed to Lin'an Fu, and its seat moved to Jianshui Prefecture (present-day Jianshui County). In the fourth year of the Yongle era (1406), Yuanjiang Fu was elevated to Yuanjiang Junmin Fu (military-civilian prefecture). In the sixth year of the Zhengde era (1511), Xi'e County moved its seat to present-day Eshan County town. In the nineteenth year of the Wanli era (1591), Pingdian County was renamed Xinping County. In the seventh year of the Chongzhen era (1634), Jiangchuan County moved its seat to Jiangchuan Yi (present-day Jiangcheng Town); Xinping County moved to present-day Xinping County town. In the eighteenth year of the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (1661), Yuanjiang Junmin Fu was changed back to Yuanjiang Fu. In the tenth year of the Yongzheng era (1732), Xinping County was transferred to the jurisdiction of Yuanjiang Fu. In the thirty-fifth year of the Qianlong era (1770), Yuanjiang Fu was downgraded to Yuanjiang Zhili Zhou (directly-administered department).

In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), the fu and zhou were abolished and changed to counties. Xinxing, Chengjiang, Yimen, and Jiangchuan Counties belonged to the Dianzhong Dao; Tonghai, Hexi, Ning, and Xi'e Counties belonged to the Linkaiguang Dao (renamed Mengzi Dao the following year); Yuanjiang and Xinping Counties belonged to the Diannan Dao (renamed Pu'er Dao the following year). In 1914, Xinxing County was renamed Xiuna County; Ning County was renamed Li County. In 1916, Xiuna County was renamed Yuxi County, named after a river within its territory that resembled a jade belt. In 1927, the dao system was abolished, and all counties came under direct provincial jurisdiction. In 1929, Xi'e County was renamed Eshan County. In 1931, Li County was renamed Huaning County. In the thirty-first year of the Republic of China (1942), Yuanjiang and Xinping Counties were placed under the Third Administrative Inspection District of Yunnan Province. In 1946, Chengjiang, Jiangchuan, and Huaning belonged to the Third District; Tonghai and Hexi belonged to the Fifth District; Xinping, Eshan, and Yuanjiang belonged to the Sixth District; Yimen and Yuxi were under direct provincial jurisdiction.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in January 1950, the Dianzhong District Administrative Commissioner's Office was established. In March of the same year, it was reorganized into Yuxi Special District, with the Commissioner's Office located in Yuxi County, governing 12 counties: Yuxi, Jiangchuan, Chengjiang, Tonghai, Hexi, Huaning, Xinping, Eshan, Kunyang, Jinning, Chenggong, and Yimen. In May 1951, the Eshan County Yi Autonomous Region was established. In 1954, Yuanjiang County from Mengzi Special District was transferred to Yuxi Special District. In 1956, the Eshan County Yi Autonomous Region was changed to the Eshan Yi Autonomous County; Tonghai and Hexi Counties were merged to establish Qilu County. In 1958, Kunyang County was abolished and merged into Jinning County. In 1960, Qilu County was renamed Tonghai County; Jiangchuan County was abolished and merged into Yuxi County; Chenggong County was abolished and merged into Jinning County, and Jinning County was transferred to Kunming City. In 1962, Jiangchuan County was restored, and its seat moved to Dajie Town. In 1970, Yuxi Special District was renamed Yuxi Prefecture. In December 1979, Xinping County was reorganized into the Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County; Yuanjiang County was reorganized into the Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County. In 1983, Yuxi County was abolished and reorganized into the county-level Yuxi City. On December 13, 1997, Yuxi Prefecture and the county-level Yuxi City were abolished and reorganized into the prefecture-level Yuxi City; the former county-level Yuxi City was reorganized into Hongta District.

Yuxi City is located in the central part of Yunnan Province. It borders Kunming City to the north, Pu'er City to the southwest, Honghe Prefecture to the southeast, and Chuxiong Prefecture to the northwest. Its geographic coordinates range from approximately 23°19′ to 24°53′ north latitude and 101°16′ to 103°9′ east longitude. The maximum east-west distance is about 172 kilometers, and the maximum north-south distance is 163.5 kilometers. The entire area lies within the Ailao Mountains, on the western edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The terrain is higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast, characterized by complex topography dominated by mountains, with intermixed distributions of mountains, canyons, plateaus, and basins. The main peak of the Ailao Mountains, Daxueguo Mountain, has an elevation of 3,137 meters, which is the highest point in the region.

In 2021, Yuxi City's gross domestic product (GDP) reached 235.23 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.1%. The added values of the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries were 23.64 billion yuan, 102.39 billion yuan, and 109.20 billion yuan, respectively, with the industrial structure ratio being 10.1 : 43.5 : 46.4. The per capita disposable income of urban permanent residents was 46,001 yuan, while that of rural permanent residents was 18,670 yuan. The city's fixed asset investment grew by 7.8%, and the general public budget expenditure amounted to 25.76 billion yuan.

By the end of 2022, the total registered household population according to public security authorities was 2.224 million (excluding Yangzong Town), of which the male population was 1.118 million, accounting for 50.3% of the total; the female population was 1.106 million, accounting for 49.7% of the total. The urban population was 1.018 million, and the rural population was 1.206 million.

According to the Seventh National Population Census in 2020, the city's permanent resident population was 2,249,502. Compared with the 2,303,518 people from the Sixth National Population Census, there was a total decrease of 54,016 people over the ten years, a decline of 2.34%, with an average annual growth rate of -0.24%. Among them, the male population was 1,155,211, accounting for 51.35% of the total population; the female population was 1,094,291, accounting for 48.65% of the total population. The sex ratio of the total population (with females as 100) was 105.57. The population aged 0–14 was 360,147, accounting for 16.01% of the total population; the population aged 15–59 was 1,516,846, accounting for 67.43% of the total population; the population aged 60 and above was 372,509, accounting for 16.56% of the total population, of which the population aged 65 and above was 288,027, accounting for 12.8% of the total population. The population living in urban areas was 1,210,702, accounting for 53.82% of the total population; the population living in rural areas was 1,038,800, accounting for 46.18% of the total population.

Among the city's permanent resident population, the Han population was 1,521,363, accounting for 67.63%; the total population of various ethnic minorities was 728,139, accounting for 32.37%. Compared with the Sixth National Population Census in 2010, the Han population decreased by 38,918, a decline of 2.49%, and its proportion of the total population decreased by 0.1 percentage points; the total population of various ethnic minorities decreased by 15,098, a decline of 2.03%, and its proportion of the total population increased by 0.1 percentage points. Among them, the Yi population decreased by 13,332, a decline of 2.98%, and its proportion of the total population decreased by 0.13 percentage points; the Hani population decreased by 5,742, a decline of 4.41%, and its proportion of the total population decreased by 0.12 percentage points; the Dai population decreased by 3,541, a decline of 4.81%, and its proportion of the total population decreased by 0.08 percentage points.

The predominant religious beliefs in Yuxi City are Buddhism, Taoism, and Islam. Buddhism has a long history in Yuxi City; for example, Xiushan Temple in Xiushan Park is one of the earliest Buddhist temples in Yunnan, while the Christian church in Hongta District serves as an important venue for Christianity. Taoism also holds significant influence in Yuxi, with sites like the Jade Emperor Pavilion being important Taoist sacred places. Additionally, Islam has spread widely in areas such as Yimen County, where the Mosuo Mosque serves as a key religious site for local Muslims.

In recent years, Yuxi City has actively promoted the Sinicization of religion, strengthening the compatibility of religion with socialist society. Through activities such as the "Five Advances" (including education on the national flag and anthem, as well as education on the constitution, laws, and regulations), the city has enhanced the ideological and political awareness within religious circles. At the same time, Yuxi City has focused on the standardized management of religious activity sites, formulating the "Yuxi City Religious Activity Site Management Measures" to ensure the legality and safety of religious activities.

Yuxi City, located in central Yunnan Province, China, is a city with a long history and rich cultural heritage. Known as the hometown of Nie Er, Yuxi is one of Yunnan's important cultural and tourism centers. It boasts abundant natural landscapes and cultural history, including world natural heritage sites such as Fuxian Lake and the Chengjiang Fossil Site, as well as historical artifacts like the Bronze Case of Ox and Tiger.

The cultural characteristics of Yuxi City are distinct, encompassing the traditional customs and art forms of multiple ethnic groups, including the Yi, Dai, Han, and Bai peoples. Among these, intangible cultural heritage items such as the Yi Flower Drum Dance, Yunnan Opera, and Huadeng Opera are particularly prominent. Additionally, Yuxi is renowned as the "Hometown of Yunnan Tobacco" and the "Hometown of Huadeng," with Huadeng Opera being one of the most representative local folk art forms.

In recent years, Yuxi City has vigorously promoted the deep integration of culture and tourism.
