Main History
2. History
In 1910, local residents discovered the Boli Coalfield. Shortly thereafter, private individuals began mining coal along the banks of the Anle and Qizihe rivers for sale. On September 15, 1918 (the seventh year of the Republic of China), Boli County was established, governing the area now known as Qitaihe and falling under the jurisdiction of Yilan Circuit. In August 1954, Boli County was placed under the administration of the Hejiang District of Heilongjiang Province.
In 1958, large-scale mining of the Qitaihe Coalfield (Boli Coalfield) began, and the nation's first privately funded railway, financed by Boli County, opened to traffic. This brought vitality to the remote mountainous area of Qitaihe, which had long been under the jurisdiction of Boli County. Due to rapid economic and social development and a sharp increase in population, on March 1, 1965, the Qitaihe Town of Boli County was abolished, and the Qitaihe Special District (county-level) was established, directly under the jurisdiction of the Hejiang District.
On April 1, 1970, the Qitaihe Special District was upgraded to a county-level city. In November 1983, Qitaihe City was elevated to a provincial-administered city, and at the same time, Boli County, along with the Hongwei Township and Lanfeng Township of Baoqing County, were incorporated into Qitaihe City.
