8.1 Dialects

The dialects of Dandong City, Donggang, and Kuandian belong to the Jiaoliao Mandarin group. This linguistic characteristic formed due to the warfare and famine in the Jiaodong Peninsula during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China era, which drove many refugees from inside the Shanhai Pass to venture into Northeast China (Chuang Guandong). They eventually settled on the Liaodong Peninsula, creating a small northeastern enclave of Jiaodong Mandarin. In contrast, the dialect of the Fengcheng area belongs to Northeastern Mandarin.
