Main History

2. History

Leshan has a long history, dating back over 2,000 years when it served as the capital of the Shu Kingdom under King Kaiming. During the Han Dynasty, it was established as Nan'an County. In the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Emei County and Pingqiang County were established. In the ninth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (589 AD), Emei County was renamed Qingyi County. The following year, Qingyi County was changed to Longyou County. In the thirteenth year of the Kaihuang era, Emei County was re-established.

During the Tang Dynasty, Longyou County served as the seat of Jiazhou. In the Song Dynasty, it was reorganized into Jiading Prefecture. During the Yuan Dynasty, it became Jiading Circuit. In the Ming Dynasty, it was changed to Jiading Directly Administered Prefecture. In the twelfth year of the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty (1734 AD), it was restored as Jiading Prefecture, and Leshan County was established. According to the Jiading Prefecture Gazetteer, the name "Leshan" was derived from "Zhile Mountain" within the county's territory, but the exact location of Zhile Mountain has been a subject of debate across different historical periods. The boundaries of Jiading Prefecture were not entirely the same as those of present-day Leshan City.

During the Republic of China era, it remained under the jurisdiction of Sichuan Province. In 1950, Leshan Special Administrative Region was established, and in 1968, it was renamed Leshan Prefecture. In 1978, Leshan County merged with Wutongqiao District to form Leshan City (a county-level city). In May 1985, Leshan Prefecture was abolished and upgraded to a prefecture-level city, establishing Leshan City as a prefecture-level administrative division. In 1997, six counties under its jurisdiction (Meishan County, Pengshan County, Renshou County, Hongya County, Danling County, and Qingshen County) were separated to form Meishan Prefecture.

Geography

3. Geography

Leshan City is located in the central part of Sichuan Province, at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi Rivers in the southwestern part of the Sichuan Basin. The terrain is predominantly hilly, with mountainous areas in the southwest and alluvial plains along the rivers. It borders Meishan to the north, Zigong and Yibin to the east, Liangshan to the south, and Ya'an to the west.

3.1 Climate

The entire city falls within the central subtropical climate zone, characterized by mild and humid conditions, four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, and pleasant springs and winters. The average elevation is approximately 500 meters. The annual precipitation is 1394 mm, with an average annual temperature of 17.2°C. The southwestern mountainous area exhibits significant vertical climatic variation. From the foothills to the mountain peaks, there is a complete sequence of climate zones: central subtropical, warm temperate, temperate, and cold temperate. This results in highly complex climatic conditions, making the region suitable for developing comprehensive agricultural operations and three-dimensional agriculture. It is a primary production area for timber, tea, medicinal herbs, and other crops, as well as a valuable tourism resource. Influenced by monsoons and topographic uplift, the climate is humid with plentiful rainfall.

3.2 Resources

3.2.1 Mineral Resources

Approximately 30 types of resources have been identified. Among them, phosphorus, rock salt, limestone, kaolin, natural gas, gypsum, dolomite, mineral water, and mirabilite have relatively large reserves.

3.2.2 Hydropower

  • Water resources: 85.51 billion cubic meters
  • Theoretical hydropower potential: 7.9 million kilowatts
  • Developable capacity: 5.75 million kilowatts
  • Major hydropower stations: Gongzui Hydropower Station (700,000 kilowatts), Tongjiezzi Hydropower Station (600,000 kilowatts)

3.2.3 Local Products

The region is home to nationally protected rare plants such as Cathaya argyrophylla, Davidia involucrata, and Metasequoia glyptostroboides, as well as rare animals like the giant panda and the dead leaf butterfly. In 1986, a Song Dynasty kiln site was discovered in Xiba Town, Wutongqiao, Leshan City, bringing to light the widely used Xiba kiln ceramics. A large-scale investigation by Sichuan Province's scientific and technical personnel revealed that the Xiba kiln was almost on par with the Jian kiln and Jizhou kiln of the same era. Its main characteristic is the stunning and endlessly varied kiln transformations that occur during the firing process. Recently, a Xiba kiln lamp tree inscribed with "Taihe" was discovered, estimated to date from the period 1201–1208, during the reign of Emperor Zhangzong of the Jin Dynasty, suggesting that Leshan City may have been under Jin Dynasty rule at that time, rather than Southern Song rule.
