By Air

  • Karamay has an airport. You can fly to Karamay Airport and then proceed to the scenic area.

By Rail

  • Karamay also has a railway station. You can take a train to Karamay Railway Station and then travel to the relevant scenic areas.

By Coach

  • (1) Karamay Coach Station is located in the city center. Daily coaches to and from Urumqi run every hour from 09:30 to 19:30. The entire journey is approximately 400 km/4 hours and 30 minutes, with a fare of 115 yuan.
  • (2) Urho Karamay operates four daily round-trip coaches to Urho.
  • (3) Urho District runs two daily coaches to Karamay.

Within the Scenic Area

  • To provide convenience and enhance the visitor experience, the World Devil City Scenic Area offers shuttle sightseeing trains. The schedule varies between peak and off-peak seasons. During the off-peak season, trains depart every 30 minutes or when full. During the peak season, trains run on a continuous loop, departing approximately every 5 minutes. The journey covers about 13 kilometers.

Travel Routes

Regular Route:

  • Enter through the scenic area's east gate and take the sightseeing train. Follow the stops for a tour, with onboard audio commentary ensuring you don’t miss any highlights. The first stop features white camels, where you can ride and take photos. Subsequent stops include filming locations for Seven Swordsmen and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as well as Dinosaur Park. Simply follow the train for an efficient and standard experience. The train stops at each station, with audio commentary along the way, allowing time for photos at every stop.
  • Friendly Reminder: There’s no need to rush when getting off. If the train is about to leave, you can ignore the call to board. Take your time with photos and wait for the next train.

Photography Route:

  • If you’re aiming for stunning photos, skip the train and opt for hiking instead. After all, the most beautiful scenery is found along the way. To capture unique shots, you’ll need to put in the effort others haven’t.
  • The entire scenic route is approximately 9.8 kilometers. Follow the asphalt road, which forms a loop. If you lose your way, simply look for the sightseeing train.

Self-Driving Route:

  • Near the Devil’s City on Longji Road, around the location marked as "Peacock Welcoming Guests" on the map, you’ll find a fork in the road with a sign reading "Devil’s City Deep Off-Road Self-Driving Scenic Area." This is the correct entrance.
  • The self-driving route is short, taking about half an hour to complete. It’s a loop suitable even for regular two-wheel-drive vehicles. When you reach the oilfield operation area, you’ll meet up with the main scenic area’s train stop. Park your car here and use your ticket to board the sightseeing train.
  • The train’s final stop is the east gate of the World Devil’s City. After disembarking, head left to the starting point of the sightseeing train. Use your ticket to continue riding until you return to the oilfield operation area to retrieve your car.
  • Remember: Drones are not allowed in the main scenic area but are permitted in the self-driving zone.

Travel Tips

  • First Stop: Hundred-Mile Oilfield, featuring thousands of automated oil pumps extracting oil. You can get off for a close-up view of the oil extraction process.
  • Second Stop: Observe galloping horses and uniquely shaped rocks. The most notable sight here is the lifelike horses.
  • Third Stop: Movie filming locations and Liusha River. Climb to a high point for a panoramic view of the Seven Swordsmen filming site, along with some rock formations resembling small rabbits and dogs.
  • Fourth Stop: Filming locations for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, including the famous "Devil Couple" three-faced stone figures.
  • Fifth Stop: Dinosaur Valley. Due to the numerous dinosaur fossils discovered in the World Devil’s City, lifelike dinosaur models have been recreated here—some standing on cliffs, others clinging to steep walls.

  • The Chongjian Three Experience Zone stop is a themed area dedicated to petroleum culture. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Filming Location

Devil Couple

  • As we round a bend, one of the Ghost City's most famous iconic landscapes comes into view. It is a rare rock formation with two distinct faces. First, look to the left side of the road ahead—can you see a face gazing eastward? The eyebrows, eyes, facial structure, and mouth are all remarkably lifelike. But that’s not all. As we slowly pass by and look back at this massive rock, you’ll notice another face on its left side, also gazing eastward but with a completely different facial structure and expression. This is the Ghost City’s famous "Two-Faced Person." Since the two faces appear as one male and one female, it is also called the "Devil Couple." The design inspiration for the Ghost City Tourism Company logo on your tickets also comes from this formation.

Sea Lion Gazing at the Moon

  • Not far ahead from the "Eagle Spreading Its Wings," you’ll see one of the Ghost City’s most famous attractions: the Sea Lion Gazing at the Moon. In this vast desert landscape, a pair of sea lion lovers raise their heads toward each other, sharing their heartfelt feelings. Karamay World Devil City Scenic Area

I. Introduction

The Karamay World Devil City Scenic Area, abbreviated as the World Devil City Scenic Area, is a tourist attraction located within Karamay City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, characterized by Yardang landforms. The scenic area integrates natural landscapes such as Gobi Yardang, desert canyons, stone beaches with Euphrates poplars, natural asphalt, sunrise and rosy clouds, and mirages. It boasts tourism resources like rock Yardang formations and natural asphalt veins and is the place of origin for Xinjiang's "Golden Silk Jade," a treasure of the Silk Road. According to research, during the Cretaceous period over 100 million years ago, this area was a vast freshwater lake. The lakeshore was lush with vegetation, and the waters were inhabited by Wuerhe stegosaurs, plesiosaurs, and other ancient creatures. Later, after two major crustal movements, the lake transformed into a vast land of desert interspersed with sandstone and mudstone, geologically referred to as a "Gobi platform." When strong winds arise, strange roars emanate from here, hence its name "Devil City."

The World Devil City Scenic Area is located at No. 200 Longji Road, Wuerhe District, Karamay City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. It covers an area of over 10 square kilometers and is approximately 100 kilometers from Karamay City.

Topography and Landforms

The World Devil City Scenic Area is a "wind-eroded city," formed by winds resulting from air movement, making it a "wind-erosion landform." The wind whips up sand, gravel, and stones, continuously striking, impacting, and abrading the rocks, which then produce various sounds. Over long periods, rocks of varying hardness are sculpted by the wind into all sorts of strange shapes.

The strata of the World Devil City were formed by the gradual accumulation and layering of sedimentary rocks from the Paleozoic era. Consequently, the density and thickness of the rocks vary. Additionally, situated in an arid, low-rainfall desert region, the scorching sun bakes the ground intensely during the day, while temperatures plummet sharply at night. This drastic temperature difference causes rocks to crack. Sometimes, fissures or channels appear, and when wind passes through, it produces strange sounds. The Wuerhe Devil City is located in a wind corridor, experiencing strong winds year-round. The fierce winds, carrying small stones, relentlessly batter the rocks over long periods. This internal and external pressure on rocks of varying hardness transforms them into bizarre stone formations.

Legend

It is said that this place was once a grand and magnificent castle, where the men were handsome and strong, and the women beautiful and kind. The people lived prosperous, harmonious, and peaceful lives through their hard work. However, as wealth accumulated, evil gradually took hold of their hearts. They began to indulge in debauchery, deceit, exploitation, and even bloody fights. To awaken their conscience, a deity transformed into a ragged beggar and came to the castle, telling the people, "I became a beggar from a wealthy man because of evil. You should take this as a warning!" Not only did this fail to work, but the beggar was met with insults and mockery. Enraged, the deity turned the place into ruins, burying everyone in the castle beneath the rubble. They cried out day and night, hoping the deity would hear their belated repentance.

Geological Value

According to research, during the Cretaceous period about 100 million years ago, this was a vast freshwater lake. Lush plants grew along the shores, and the waters were inhabited by Wuerhe stegosaurs, plesiosaurs, dinosaurs, Junggar pterosaurs, and other ancient creatures. After two major tectonic shifts, the lake transformed into a vast desert land, geologically referred to as a "gobi platform."

Scientific Research Value

The strata of the Ghost City were formed by the accumulation of sedimentary rocks from the Paleozoic era over time. Consequently, the density and thickness of the rocks vary. Additionally, located in an arid, rain-scarce desert region, the scorching sun bakes the ground intensely during the day, while temperatures plummet at night. This drastic temperature difference causes the rocks to crack.
