Scenic Landscapes

Sun Stone

In front of the main entrance of the scenic area stands the Sun Stone, a natural wonder measuring 7.5 meters in length, 2 meters in thickness, 4.3 meters in height, and weighing 150 tons.

Legend has it that the Sun Stone is an immortal pill dropped by the Supreme Lord Lao during his alchemical practices. In his youth, the founding emperor of the Jin Dynasty sharpened his sword on this stone to bolster his resolve. As an adult, he and his generals used it to strategize by drawing plans in ash (a practice of the Jin military where high-ranking officers held meetings before battles, using ash as paper and branches as pens to sketch invasion routes, which were erased afterward without leaving a trace), leading to the conquest of the Liao Dynasty and the invasion of the Song Dynasty. General Li Zhaolin of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army also rested here with his troops, giving rise to the saying, "Warmth from the fire in front, cold from the wind behind." Of course, these tales are folk legends without official verification. Nevertheless, they highlight the local belief that the Sun Stone is a remarkable rock.

During the third phase of the Sun Island comprehensive renovation project, the Harbin Federation of Literary and Art Circles organized numerous artists to search for a massive stone that would harmonize with Sun Island. Eventually, the present-day "Sun Stone" was selected.

Squirrel Island

As the name suggests, Squirrel Island is home to nearly 2,000 artificially domesticated squirrels roaming freely. In June 2006, Sun Island Park introduced over 600 additional squirrels from the mountainous areas of Liaoning Province, further increasing the squirrel population. It is the largest squirrel viewing, domestication, and科普 base in Heilongjiang Province.

Covering an area of approximately 24,000 square meters, Squirrel Island is located in the northern part of the Sun Island Scenic Area, surrounded by water and featuring undulating terrain. It consists of three small islands connected by wooden-style boardwalks, with glass walls installed around the perimeter to prevent the squirrels from escaping. The island is lush with trees, some of which are equipped with wooden squirrel nests for栖息. Additionally, the island features many孔洞-style garden ornaments and large拟木 and拟石 landscapes.

Swan Lake

Swan Lake is situated in the northern part of Sun Island Park, covering an area of 1.2 hectares. It is home to free-ranging waterfowl such as black swans, whooper swans, tundra swans, mandarin ducks, mallards, swan geese, and greylag geese.

Sun Island Flower Garden

Located north of Gate 1, the Sun Island Flower Garden spans 7 hectares and is the largest flower base in the three northeastern provinces of China. The garden boasts over 200,000 rare and precious northern flowers, including 39 varieties of peonies and herbaceous peonies in 12 color tones.

Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Memorial Garden

The Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Memorial Garden is located in the eastern part of Sun Island, within the embankment. Built to commemorate the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, it has become the largest education and memorial base for the War of Resistance against Japan in Northeast China. Covering an area of 36,000 square meters, the garden centers around sculptures of anti-Japanese soldiers, a lake, and grasslands. Its design differs from traditional solemn memorial styles, combining主题 sculptures, anti-Japanese camps, and landscapes such as起伏 terrain, trees, flowing water, and massive rocks to recreate the anti-Japanese battlefield amidst the white mountains and black waters.

Within the memorial garden, a uniquely shaped large tree is known as the "Anti-Japanese United Army Tree." This tree is a sugar maple, a precious northern species over 80 years old. Although its trunk has withered, new saplings have sprouted from its base. These saplings are lush and thriving, symbolizing that while the heroes of the Anti-Japanese United Army have passed away, the revolutionary flame continues through generations, and their spirit remains immortal.

Ice and Snow Art Gallery

Built in 2000 through a joint investment by Dalian Refrigeration Co., Ltd. and the Sun Island Scenic Area Management Office, the Ice and Snow Art Gallery covers an area of 5,000 square meters with a clear height of 7 meters. It houses over 100 ice sculptures, making it the world's largest indoor ice and snow art venue. The ice sculptures are crafted from natural ice from the Songhua River and artificial snow. The gallery's significance lies in bringing winter冰雪景观 to life indoors during spring, summer, and autumn. It is divided into five main areas:

  • Ancient Charm Illuminated: Drawing inspiration from ancient Chinese art such as Dunhuang murals, Longmen Grottoes, Datong carvings, and Dazu rock carvings, this area showcases the culture of the Northern Wei period, reflecting the history of human civilization and progress.
  • Snow Appreciation in the Plum Garden: Reflecting China's long-standing garden art, this area combines plants with冰雪造园 to create beautiful scenes that appear natural despite being man-made. The works here primarily imitate famous Chinese landmarks, such as the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall, ornamental columns, long corridors, dragon boats, and plum pavilions.
  • Winter Fun in the Northern Frontier: This area uses冰雪作品 to depict the local culture and customs of Heilongjiang Province, including its unique snowy forests and plains, the traditions of ethnic minorities, and the province's precious wildlife and plant resources.
  • Jade Sea Dragon Palace: Known for its participatory and interactive features, this area includes attractions like a giant hippo slide, a colorful ice maze, and a grand dragon palace.
  • Exotic Scenery: This area uses冰雪作品 to portray world-famous古迹,文化遗产, and foreign landscapes, such as the Royal Palace of Thailand, Indian deities, and the Roman Art Square.

In early 2007, the Ice and Snow Art Gallery underwent over two months of renovation,艺术灯饰布设, and冰雪景观重新雕制. Thirty-three new ice and snow sculptures were added, themed around Harbin's charm, depicting famous landmarks and iconic buildings like Central Street, the Temple of Bliss, and St. Nicholas Church. The total ice used reached 6,000 cubic meters.

Sun Island Art Museum

Located within the Sun Island Scenic Area, a national 5A级旅游景区, the Sun Island Art Museum focuses on the essence of Chinese culture through calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. With Sun Island as its primary创作题材, it showcases the spirit of regional culture and provides an artistic platform for renowned artists from the黑土地 and nationwide to celebrate the island. This is the first professional art museum independently established by the Sun Island Scenic Area. Covering 1,000 square meters, the museum features three exhibition areas: "Celebrity and Master Sun Island-Themed Calligraphy and Painting Works," "Celebrity and Master Original Representative Calligraphy and Painting Works," and "Representative Works of Renowned金石书画家印翁 Huang Ming." It houses a collection of over 1,000 Chinese paintings and calligraphy works and includes two independent art创作 studios. The museum's main functions include art exhibitions, aesthetic education, cultural events, calligraphy and painting competitions, solo exhibitions, and organizing artist采风创作. It is a multifunctional art exhibition hall integrating professional exhibitions, artistic采风, and cultural exchanges. Six artistic institutions are also housed within the Sun Island Art Museum: "Chinese Calligraphy Culture Museum Creation Base," "Republic Generals Calligraphy and Painting Art Creation Base," "National Youth and Children Aesthetic Education Activity Base," "International Versatile Artists Association Creation Base," "Harbin Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Calligraphy and Painting Institute Creation Base," and "Harbin Sun Island Calligraphy and Painting Institute." The establishment of the Sun Island Art Museum has further enriched the cultural内涵 of Sun Island, making it a shining star in the island's cultural community with its unique traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting art.

Sun Gate

The Sun Gate, the main entrance to Sun Island, is located at the western main entrance. Spanning 68 meters in length, it curves toward the Sun Stone at both ends, with the main gate standing 12.03 meters high. The gate consists of one large and four small elliptical arches connected together. Its design primarily incorporates the architectural language of the Art Nouveau style, blended with other artistic styles, with the creative theme being "The Window of the Sun." The central arched gate aligns with the Sun Island巨石 on the same axis, oriented east-west to face the sunrise and sunset. Four sculptures stand within the four small arches. The massive stone in front of the gate sits at the center of a radiant sun图案, with a simulated map of Harbin's city streets beneath it.

The Sun Island Russian Style Town is positioned as an exhibition scenic area showcasing the生活场景of Russian侨民culture. It is a标志性brand of Sun Island's cultural tourism. The town features 18 provincial-level cultural heritage buildings in Heilongjiang, encompassing various styles from the 15th to 19th centuries, including Renaissance, Baroque, Eclecticism, and Art Nouveau. The wooden architectural characteristics of Russian乡村folk buildings are prominent. They differ from ancient Chinese and Japanese wooden architecture and also from traditional Western European timber framing. They are constructed by horizontally stacking整根原木to form load-bearing walls, with the characteristic feature being the preserved痕迹of interlocking log corners, known in Chinese folk architecture as "木刻楞" (mùkèléng). The Sun Island Russian Town is divided into four exhibition areas: first, the Centennial Town Preface Area, showcasing百年建筑and historical culture; second, the Russian Folk Culture Display Area, including exhibitions on the history of the Chinese Eastern Railway, Russian folk customs and children's趣展, and the Russian大列巴(Bread) Museum; third, the Russian Art and Culture Exhibition Area, where one can appreciate Russian油画, ballet, music, literature, chess, amber craftsmanship, and other arts and culture; and fourth, the Exotic Style Commercial Service Area.### 4.9 Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces Memorial Park The Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces Memorial Park was built to commemorate the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces and has now become the largest education and memorial base for the War of Resistance Against Japan in Northeast China. The entire park is situated along the embankment beside the water. A 60-meter-long giant relief symbolizes the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japan. The 14 evergreen pines within the relief represent the 14 arduous years during which the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces resisted the Japanese invaders. In the grassy area, a cavalry composed of anti-Japanese soldiers and 11 majestic horses symbolizes the 11 main forces of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces. The park's inscription records the glorious history of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces' arduous and bloody struggle. In July 2005, to commemorate the heroic deeds of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces in resisting the Japanese invaders and to promote the spirit of patriotism, the Anti-Japanese United Forces Themed Memorial Park was constructed following the directives of provincial and municipal leaders and the suggestions of veteran comrades from the United Forces. Covering an area of approximately 36,000 square meters, the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces Memorial Park centers around sculptures of anti-Japanese soldiers, a lake, and grassland. Its expressive style differs from the traditionally solemn and dignified memorial models. Through thematic sculptures, anti-Japanese camps, undulating terrain, towering trees, winding streams, and massive rocks, it recreates the anti-Japanese battlefields amidst the white mountains and black waters. Under the blue sky, the thematic sculptures, anti-Japanese camps, and massive rocks form a historical tableau of the combat life of the United Forces, vividly showcasing the fighting image and spirit of resistance of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Forces.

5. Cultural Activities

5.1 Human History

Origin of the Name

Old Man Yang Rongsen, who lived on Sun Island for over 90 years, created a manuscript titled "A Brief History of Sun Island" during his lifetime, recording three name changes: initially called "Sun Beach," later referred to as "Sun Beacon," and finally named "Sun Island." The book "Sun Island—Unknown Century-Old Stories" records that during the mid-Qing Dynasty, Sun Beach was formed by years of flooding and silt deposition from the Songhua River. The sand grains on the beach were clean and large, coming in white and yellow varieties, with a translucent quality. In summer, the sand surface was scorching hot, "unfit for people by day, uninhabited by frogs at night." Moreover, because the sand grains shimmered brilliantly under sunlight, it was metaphorically called "the sun on the water." During the fishing season, fishermen would gather their boats along the shore when hauling in their nets, referring to this place as "Sun Beach." "Sun Beacon" was a term used by Chinese and Russian sailors navigating the river. In the late years of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, the upstream route from Harbin to Fuyu was opened. The first upstream "beacon" (navigation mark) was erected on Sun Beach, standing tall and highly conspicuous. Sailors often swam or rowed sampans here for wild bathing, calling it "Sun Beach Beacon," later abbreviated to "Sun Beacon." "Sun Island" is the name given by tourists and has been passed down to this day. Russians who came to construct the Chinese Eastern Railway discovered this ideal sandy beach on the north bank of the Songhua River and built scattered villas, naming it "Sun Island." Records indicate that the island was first officially marked with a Russian name on the "Complete Map of Harbin City" published by the Chinese Eastern Railway Administration in 1923. The Russian name directly translates to "sunny island" in Chinese. On June 30, 1925, the "Binjiang Times" published an article titled "Abundant Spring Scenery on Sun Island," showing that the name was already in use by then. There are many other versions regarding the origin of the name "Sun Island." One popular account is that the area around Sun Island was abundant in bream, one of the "Three Flowers and Five Luos" fish of the Songhua River. The local Manchu people called it "taiyaon" (pronounced "tai yao en"), which sounds similar to "taiyang" (sun) in Chinese. Over time, this became customary, and people added "island" to the end, broadly referring to this group of islands. Of course, there are also legends such as the name deriving from "Grandfather Sun" living on the island, but these are rather unconvincing and likely just a beautiful allegory.

5.2 Main Activities

On May 20, 2023, the "For Love, Walk with Brilliance" 2023 China·Harbin "Sports Lottery Cup" Sun Island Hiking Competition was held. On the afternoon of July 8, 2023, a celebration ceremony for Harbin's successful bid to host the 9th Asian Winter Games in 2025, themed "Meet in Harbin, Dream of the Asian Winter Games," was grandly held at the Sun Stone Square in the Sun Island Scenic Area. Local Snacks The "Sun Island Style Street" in the central area of the island offers a variety of traditional Harbin street foods, including electric-grilled skewers, grilled squid, grilled cold noodles, fried yogurt, cold skin noodles, jianbing guozi (savory crepes), stinky tofu, spicy hot pot, and fruit salads.
