Eighteen pillar sculptures, symbolizing the wounded soldiers of the New Fourth Army, showcase their unyielding revolutionary spirit through varied block forms and strong textural contrasts.

2. Reed Activity Area

The Reed Activity Area is the core of the entire scenic spot, divided into two main sections: the water-based and land-based reed mazes. The crisscrossing rivers and dense reeds create vast, narrow, deep, and winding water or land reed spaces, forming multiple mazes. This provides visitors with an opportunity to explore the wilderness and experience the historical scenes of the New Fourth Army’s guerrilla warfare in the reed marshes.

3. Hongshi Village

East of the memorial archway from the education area lies the closely connected Hongshi Folk Culture Village and Aquatic Plant Viewing Area. The horizontal inscription "Tian Kai Bo Jing" on the archway aptly captures the water-centric features of these two functional zones. Hongshi Village epitomizes the architectural style of Jiangnan water towns, recreating the ambiance of a small village during the Anti-Japanese War. The buildings are constructed along the water, with a wide expanse of water in front where fishermen cast their lines, oars creak, and reeds sway gently, evoking a tranquil water town scene. Behind the village, there are bamboo groves, lotus ponds, and small streams, presenting a picturesque rural landscape.

4. Shajiabang Revolutionary History Museum

The Shajiabang Revolutionary History Museum employs modern artistic techniques such as photographs, artifacts, dioramas, and audiovisual effects to showcase the revolutionary history of Shajiabang, the guerrilla warfare of the New Fourth Army against the Japanese, the creation of the Peking opera "Shajiabang," and the development history of the Shajiabang troops. As Elder Xia Guang told his family, "After I pass away, please bury my ashes in Shajiabang, so I may accompany my departed comrades and bathe together in the morning glow over Yangcheng Lake." The torch sculpture symbolizes the unceasing spread of the revolutionary spark, passed down through generations.

3.1.2 Folk Culture Exhibition Zone

  • Hongshi Folk Culture Village

The houses in Hongshi Village are built along the water, with stone-paved docks at their doorsteps for mooring boats, typical of Jiangnan water towns where every household faces the water and has access to boats. The village features a Wenchang Pavilion and a Tudimiao (Earth God Temple), along with folk culture displays such as the Jiangnan Wedding Customs Hall and the Jiangnan Boat Boxing Hall that interest tourists. One can also enjoy tea and opera at the Chunlai Teahouse.

  • Wenchang Pavilion

Wenchang Pavilions are typically places dedicated to Wenchang, the Deity of Literature (Wenquxing). In ancient times, scholars would come to pray for success in imperial examinations and bringing honor to their ancestors, hoping for the deity's blessing. The plaque bears the calligraphy of Weng Tonghe, a Qing Dynasty zhuangyuan (top scholar in imperial examinations) from Changshu and tutor to two emperors. This Wenchang Pavilion was originally located in Shebang Village, Shajiabang, and is the birthplace of the first Chinese Communist Party branch in Shajiabang. In April 1928, Communist Party member Shi Chucai held a meeting here to establish the Party branch and organize peasants in rent resistance struggles.

  • Tudimiao (Earth God Temple)

On November 6, 1939, the recovered wounded soldiers who had been recuperating in the reed marshes held a meeting in this Tuditang (Earth God Hall) and decided to establish the "Jiangkang Eastern Route Command," abbreviated as "New Jiangkang." Xia Guang served as commander, and Yang Haolu as deputy commander and director of the Political Department. We rebuilt the Tudimiao and Wenchang Pavilion here to commemorate the early revolutionary activities in Shajiabang.

Although a replica, it strictly reproduces the mansion structure of the 1930s and 1940s and the unique architectural style of the Jiangnan region. Its layout is rigorous, design exquisite, and craftsmanship refined, showcasing the infinite charm of traditional residential architecture, worthy of careful appreciation. Multiple film and TV dramas choose this location as an important filming scene every year, making it a must-see for visitors exploring the old street.

Combined with modern technological means, it authentically reflects the local customs and practices of the water towns. All these collections were accumulated over more than 20 years by Ms. Shen Yueying from Changshu. Various fishing nets and crab traps; tools for plowing, sowing, hoeing, harvesting, threshing, and winnowing; a man wearing a mask fluffing cotton, a girl in blue calico concentrating on spinning and weaving; scenes of croaking frogs, singing birds, crowing roosters, and barking dogs involuntarily pull our memories back to that era, intoxicating us with that simple beauty belonging only to places beyond the city.
