Scenic Spot Introduction

Dehang Grand Canyon

Dehang Grand Canyon is located deep within the Wuling Mountains, an area inhabited by the Miao ethnic group. "Dehang" in the Miao language means "beautiful canyon." The grand canyon lies in the middle section of the Wuling Grand Canyon, formed by the intersection of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Wuling Mountains, and is a typical karst landscape. It stretches approximately 48 kilometers in length, with a width ranging from about 1.5 to 3.5 kilometers. The elevation varies between 680 and 900 meters above sea level, and the vertical height of the canyon ranges from 400 to 600 meters.

Liusha Waterfall

If the Highway Wonder and the world's first suspension bridge are manifestations of the wisdom of our Xiangxi people in transforming nature, then the integrated landscape of mountains and waters in Dehang Canyon is the miraculous work of nature itself.

Aizhai Slope Highway Wonder

The "Aizhai Slope Highway Wonder" is part of the Xiangxi section of the Xiangchuan Highway, constructed during the War of Resistance against Japan primarily to facilitate the retreat and transportation of military supplies and troops. It was completed in 1936.

This highway is about six kilometers long but was built on slopes with a horizontal distance of less than 100 meters, a vertical height of 440 meters, and gradients ranging from 70 to 90 degrees.

This specific terrain forced the road to zigzag, making thirteen sharp turns and forming twenty-six nearly parallel, overlapping road sections.

Visually, this stretch of road resembles a long, folded ribbon, a compressed spring, or a steep multi-level staircase.

World's First Suspension Bridge

This suspension bridge spans the Dehang Grand Canyon with a drop of 400 meters and a main span of 1,176 meters, ranking first in the world among bridges of its kind.

The completion of the bridge will greatly alleviate traffic congestion on the Aizhai Highway.

Driving across the suspension bridge offers an absolutely thrilling experience. Walking on the steel cable bridge also provides a unique feeling of "strolling among the clouds."

Ethnic Customs

Amidst the green mountains and clear waters stand rows of wooden stilt houses with gray tiles and stone foundations, smooth stone-paved paths, delicate stone arch bridges, and groups of Miao women washing yarn in red attire and bare feet. Ancient stone rollers and waterwheels turn tirelessly with creaking sounds, telling visitors to Dehang Grand Canyon that one of China's oldest ethnic groups—the Miao people—still resides here.

Dehang Miao Village (Zhes Deut Hangd) is world-renowned as the home of Miao drumming. Here, everyone, young and old, loves to "dance and sing," and the village has produced three generations of Miao drum kings. For thousands of years, the Miao compatriots living here have used song as a medium in their daily lives, from morning till night, facing life and death with equanimity, immersed in song and dance.

Wentian Terrace Landscape

Within the Dehang Yuquanxi Grand Canyon, Wentian Terrace stands alone as a solitary peak amidst the mountains, isolated from its surroundings—a true masterpiece of nature. To ascend Wentian Terrace, one must traverse a rugged mountain path; there are no cable cars or winding mountain roads, only walking. Legend has it that this is the place where Qu Yuan, during the Warring States period 2,300 years ago, once looked to the heavens with sorrow. At the end of the Warring States period, Qu Yuan of the Chu State, framed by treacherous officials, was exiled to the Yuan and Li river areas. He later came here, climbed Wentian Terrace, and composed the timeless famous poem "Tian Wen" (Heavenly Questions), from which the terrace gets its name. The renowned singer Song Zuying once climbed Wentian Terrace to film the music video for "Tea Song," singing passionately while gazing at the sky amidst the mountains and canyon.

Liusha Waterfall

Liusha Waterfall, with a drop of 216 meters, is the highest waterfall in China and was voted one of the top ten favorite waterfalls among Chinese tourists in 2011. Resembling flowing gauze, it sways gently from side to side as it descends slowly, in clusters, strands, and layers chasing one another. Walking behind the massive waterfall, getting wet, and looking up toward the sunlight, one sees a shimmering "rain of light."

Swallow Gorge Waterfall Group

The Swallow Gorge Waterfall Group consists of ten waterfalls, each with a drop of about 200 meters. During the rainy season, the waterfalls merge into a single sheet approximately 300 meters wide, creating a spectacular sight.

Seven Wonderful Waterfalls

Aizhai boasts seven wonderful waterfalls: Liusha Waterfall, Swallow Gorge Waterfall Group, Hangxia Waterfall Group, Jade Belt Waterfall, Silver Chain Waterfall, Big Dragon Cave Waterfall, and Little Dragon Cave Waterfall, each with its own unique charm.

Seven Grand Canyons

The seven grand canyons of Aizhai include Yuquanxi Grand Canyon, Hangxiaxi Grand Canyon, Jiulongxi Grand Canyon, Dehang Chong Canyon, Big Dragon Cave Canyon, Little Dragon Cave Canyon, and Donghe Canyon.

Aizhai

The Aizhai Wonder Tourist Area is located on the golden tourist route between Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang Ancient Town. It is an emerging tourist hotspot in southwestern China and is hailed as the pearl town of the Wuling Mountain area.

Aizhai Highway

The Aizhai Mountain Highway was built in 1936 during the rule of the Kuomintang government, at a time when Japan was invading China. To facilitate retreat and the transportation of military supplies, Chiang Kai-shek personally served as the commander-in-chief for the construction of the Xiangchuan Highway. The Aizhai Mountain Highway is a natural peril along this route. To meet the tight schedule, over 2,000 laborers worked on this mountain highway, with more than 200 losing their lives. On the mountain, a bronze statue of the "Trailblazer" stands, and a "Cemetery for the Deceased Workers of the Xiangchuan Highway" has been erected.

Aizhai Bridge

Aizhai Bridge, the world's largest extra-large suspension bridge spanning a canyon. Walking onto the bridge offers an unprecedented sensation—like a bird soaring into the sky, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the surrounding mountains, overlooking the Dehang Grand Canyon, Aizhai Miao Town, and the wonder of the mountain highway below. The world opens up before you. The heart soars over the vast sea of bright yellow rapeseed flowers in the canyon, experiencing boundless joy.

Scenic Area Overview

The Aizhai Wonder Tourist Area is located in Jishou City, the capital of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. It is the core scenic area of the Dehang Scenic Spot, 19 kilometers from the city center, with a total area of 8.1 square kilometers. It includes three main attractions: Aizhai Bridge, Jidou Miao Village, and Dehang Canyon. Integrating wonders of roads and bridges, ethnic culture, and spectacular mountain scenery, it is a comprehensive cultural tourism area combining sightseeing, experience, education, and leisure. The Aizhai Wonder Tourist Area officially opened to the public in 1987, was approved as a provincial-level scenic area in 1991, became a national scenic area in December 2005, and was rated as a National 4A-level Tourist Attraction in 2013. Within the Aizhai Wonder Tourist Area, the terrain features dramatic changes in elevation, steep cliffs, towering peaks, and crisscrossing rivers and streams, forming numerous cliffs, rock walls, waterfalls, and primeval forests. This landscape has given rise to six major wonders, which are the origin of the name "Aizhai Wonders": the Wonder Road (Aizhai Highway Wonder), the Wonder Bridge (the large-span steel truss suspension bridge across the canyon—Aizhai Bridge), the Wonder Village (the Miao village on the eagle's back—Jidou Miao Village), the Wonder Valleys (such as Yuquanxi, Jiulongxi, and Hangxiaxi Canyons), the Wonder Waterfalls (including the high-drop Liusha Waterfall, Jade Belt Waterfall, Silver Chain Waterfall, and Hangxiaxi Waterfall Group), and the Wonder Customs (the world-famous drum village). These fully showcase the extraordinary landscapes, classic culture, and modern technology of Xiangxi.

The entire Xiangchuan Highway is 1,256 kilometers long. Its construction began in early the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935) and was fully completed and opened to traffic in September of the 25th year of the Republic of China (1936). During the eight-year War of Resistance against Japan, the Xiangchuan Highway was the only通道 connecting the Yuehan and Xiangguiqian routes to the vast rear area in the southwest, bearing a great historical mission. The middle section of the Xiangchuan Highway traverses the entire territory of western Hunan, with the road winding up and down through towering mountains and steep ridges. Its惊险程度 exceeds imagination. The Aizhai Mountain Highway is about 6 kilometers long but was built on大小 slopes with a horizontal distance of less than 100 meters, a vertical height difference of 440 meters, and gradients of 70-90 degrees. This specific space forced the road to turn multiple times, forming 13 sharp acute bends and 26 sections of almost parallel,上下重叠 road surfaces. The widest part of the road does not exceed 7 meters, and the narrowest section is less than 4 meters, where two small cars cannot pass simultaneously. Its地势之险 and巧妙 engineering design rank first among national highways,被称为 the "Aizhai Highway奇观," becoming a special attraction in western Hunan.

3.2.2 Dehang Miao Village

"Dehang" in Miao language (deut hangd) means "beautiful canyon." Dehang Miao Village is an ancient and magical Miao village within this beautiful canyon, a unique flower镶嵌 in mysterious western Hunan. Located at the core of the Dehang Scenic Area, the village is built against the mountains, surrounded by千山飞瀑. The民居 have upturned eaves and corners,半遮半掩, with fire walls,吊脚楼, carved花窗,奇特造型,鲜明格调, and缤纷色彩, all displaying the atmosphere of ancient遗民. Over a hundred Miao households reside in Dehang Miao Village, preserving千年古俗 to this day. Dehang Miao Village is world-renowned as the hometown of Miao drums. Men, women, old, and young all love "drum dancing," and it has produced five generations of Miao drum kings. The Miao同胞繁衍 here have lived and worked in peace for thousands of years. They speak the Miao language, wear collarless embroidered clothes, use songs as媒 for自由恋爱; follow daily routines, take life and death in stride; and are immersed in song and dance.#### 3.2.3 Yuquanxi Canyon Yuquanxi Canyon is a deep and secluded gorge connecting Jidou Miao Village, Wentian Platform, and Dehang Miao Village. Within the canyon, the mountains rise and fall dramatically, with sheer cliffs standing tall, waterfalls cascading down, and peculiar rocks jutting out. Two large mountains stand facing each other across the Yuquanxi Canyon, forming a natural stone gate. Because there is a pool of clear, jade-like spring water in the middle of this stone gate, it is called the "Jade Spring Gate."

3.2.4 Jiulongxi Canyon

Jiulongxi Canyon stretches for 2,400 meters. Along its banks, strange peaks rise in myriad postures, with sheer cliffs as picturesque as paintings and vibrant colors. The stream water along the way is clear and lively, flowing ceaselessly through all four seasons, and the stream is rich with plump shrimp and crabs. The path passes by Chuantou Mountain, Suozi Rock, Conch Peak, and Yinlian Waterfall, eventually reaching Liusha Waterfall, which boasts the greatest height drop in China.

3.2.5 Liusha Waterfall

Liusha Waterfall is located at the source of the Jiulongxi Stream. With a height of 216 meters, it hangs in the air like a white silk ribbon or a silver gauze against the cliff, making it one of China's taller waterfalls. It can be seen after a short walk along the Jiulongxi Stream from Dehang Miao Village. The stream water plunges down from the sheer cliff. Due to the significant height drop, the water disperses into a sand-like flow by the time it reaches the bottom, hence the name "Liusha" (Flowing Sand) Waterfall. During the high-water season, torrents of water cascade from the cliff into the deep pool, resembling nine dragons churning the waves, swallowing clouds and spitting mist, with a sound like thunder that shakes the valley, creating a majestic and spectacular scene. In the dry season, the water drifts down the cliff, sometimes like a light gauze brushing the face, sometimes like a bead curtain hanging, akin to white silk cleansing the green pool, stirring up layers of ripples, displaying graceful and gentle elegance. Visitors can walk along the mountain paths on either side, passing beneath the waterfall. A faint mist-like spray drifts down, creating a feeling of entering a "Water Curtain Cave," with a fine drizzle that seems to seep into one's heart.

3.3 Jidou Miao Village Scenic Area

3.3.1 Jidou Miao Village

Jidou Miao Village is situated atop the mountain peaks of the Wannian Canyon in Aizhai Town, Jishou City, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province. It is located within the Dehang Scenic Area, 24 kilometers from downtown Jishou. "Jidou" is a transliteration from the Miao language, meaning "the Miao village riding on the back of an eagle." The mountain range where Jidou Miao Village sits resembles a giant eagle spreading its wings, ready to take flight, with Jidou Village恰好 perched on the eagle's back.

Behind Jidou Miao Village, steep cliffs rise sharply on both sides, towering and exceptionally precipitous as if carved by an axe or knife, forming a beautiful grand canyon. It is internationally recognized in geological circles as a "Golden Spike Section."

3.3.2 Wentian Platform

Within the Dehang Yuquanxi Grand Canyon, Wentian Platform stands among the mountains, with a cliff-side height of about 150 meters. It is exposed on three sides, a solitary peak rising alone, isolated from its surroundings. A natural viewing platform formed on the rock pillar served as a place for prayer and sacrificial ceremonies in ancient times. Surrounded by纵横交错的 canyons and rows of peaks, reaching Wentian Platform requires traversing a rugged mountain path—there are no cable cars or winding mountain roads, only徒步攀登. Climbing up from the Jade Spring Gate, one arrives at Wentian Platform just before reaching the summit. Mountain ranges surround a solitary peak, with a sheer abyss ahead. Standing here feels as if one can truly converse with the heavens. Legend has it that this is the place where, during the Warring States period 2,300 years ago, the poet Qu Yuan once lamented and questioned the heavens. At the end of the Warring States period, Qu Yuan of the Chu State, framed by treacherous court officials, was exiled to the Yuan and Li river areas. He later came here, ascended the platform, and composed the famous timeless poem "Tian Wen" (Heavenly Questions), from which the platform derives its name.

3.4 Shibadong (Eighteen Caves) Scenic Area

3.4.1 Yelang Shibadong

Hidden within Liantaishan Mountain, Yelang Shibadong is a large-scale karst mixed cave within the喀斯特地貌 of the Xiangxi region. The cave is vast and complex, with a hidden and difficult-to-find entrance. Inside, the景观 are rich and mysterious, and there is an underground阴河 leading to the outside. The cave's景观 are奇特, with varied forms and divine craftsmanship, earning it the reputation as the "Number One Wonder Cave in Asia."

3.4.2 Liantaishan Mountain

Liantaishan Mountain was once over a thousand acres of barren hills. Through the relentless efforts of forest rangers, it is now a continuous stretch of forest, filled with birdsong and fragrant flowers, forming a beautiful natural风景线 that shelters Shibadong Village.

3.4.3 Ancient Well

The ancient well was built 70 years ago and remains in good condition. It has always been a place for local villagers to fetch water and wash clothes. The well's exterior is built with bluestone. The approach to the well is a stone staircase built by the villagers for convenient water access. Many stones surround the well, enclosing it so that only one side is exposed, making it look like a cave from a distance. The well is well-preserved.

3.4.4 Tudimiao (Earth God Temple)

Also known as Fudemiao or Bogongmiao, the Tudimiao is a small structure spontaneously built by villagers. As the Earth God holds a relatively low divine status, these temples are mostly simple in design. Two stones serve as walls and one as a roof, forming the temple, commonly called a "pile-style" Earth God temple. The worship of the Earth God originates from ancient people's reverence for land rights. The land yields the five grains, acting as humanity's "parent for food and clothing," hence people make offerings to it. As a place where people集中祭祀 the Earth God, the Earth God temple naturally flourished.

3.4.5 Zhuzi (Bamboo) Village

Zhuzi Village is built according to local conditions. The dwellings are mainly divided into three levels following the terrain, creating a well-proportioned and staggered spatial arrangement. The village integrates with the environment, connected by bamboo-fenced paths leading to every household, reflecting the characteristics of Zhuzi Village and constituting an authentic Miao hometown.

3.4.6 Dangrong Village

The dwellings in Dangrong Village are all built following the mountain's contours, with orderly planning and reasonable layout. The street and alley spaces are arranged顺势 according to the地形, ascending with the slope. Bluestone-paved streets and alleys, stilted buildings, and vegetation together form a harmonious and traditionally meaningful street space.

3.4.7 Lizhi (Pear) Village

Lizhi Village grows naturally following the mountain's contours. The dwellings are layered, staggered, and offer open视野. The architecture blends with the environment, creating a serene意境 whether viewed from afar or up close. Winding rural paths connect everything,构成 an authentic Miao hometown.
